One of the guys I always keep an eye on for new stuff – is Kelly Felix, now of “Bring The Fresh” and previously of “The Rich Jerk” fame. Kelly is one of the guys online who REALLY knows his stuff. This isn’t a “Guru” – in terms of “let’s churn out the guru fodder, and make money with the web marketing Guru status” – this is someone who has consistently earned big money online, most of the time while under the radar, and with stuff not related to the web marketing arena, that is – Kelly is one of the very rare people who’s out there doing this stuff, and shares what he is actually doing to make money online – I can’t tell you how rare this is!

Many “guru’s” in the web marketing arena that create hit products regularly, specifically build products to sell, they tell people what they want to hear, they regurgitate old stuff & re-package it with most of the focus on the launch & the packaging – this isn’t what Kelly does!

If you’re searching for total surfing fitness torrent or total surfing fitness download etc, then you may well one of the MANY people who search for sneaky free ways to get stuff, and look I get it – it’s so simple to do this, that for some of us online it can seem silly to pay to download anything, but - just let me ask you this – are you like the guy I saw earlier today trying to steal a bottle of brandy from a shop??

He skulked down the isle of the supermarket, looking very dodgy, may as well have carried a sign which said “watch me, I’ll probably try to steal something”  he certainly wasn’t an accomplished professional thief - he just needed something so bad that he didn’t care what he was lowering himself to. I have to say, I didn’t look at him in a judgmental way – I see the facts, the guy is trying to steal alcohol, but I don’t think “the guy is scum” or that he’s a low life or whatever, I think it’s a real shame that he’s got to that point – I’d love to see him one day walking down the street a changed guy, clean, without  ”I am going to try to steal booze”  stamped on his forehead – but for now this is what he’s doing, nothing I can do to change that, hopefully he’ll make the decision and find the strength to get himself out of where he’s got to – but anyway, enough of the philosophical bollox, and back to where I was going with this

While many of us would think of ourselves as completely different to this, how different is online theft to offline theft??

Most law abiding citizens will be amazed by this, and wouldn’t dream of it – but what’s the difference between walking out of a shop without paying for stuff, than finding a way to walk off with online products without paying for them?

In fact, isn’t it even worse – morally – to directly impact upon individuals trying to make a living online, than it is to make a tiny dent in the profits of a retail chain who make billions in profit each year, and who probably waste more than thus guy stole, every single day at this single store alone by throwing stuff away that hit the sell by date??

Just ask yourself that question when you’re looking for “total surfing fitness torrent” isn’t this  tying to steal from an individual?

So your website is ready, and now SEO is needed in order to start the flow of targeted search engine traffic. But, is SEO the logical next step – the answer is no, don’t jump the gun or you may waste time & effort.

Before you start doing SEO or paying someone to start doing it for you, what you need to do, or to get someone to do, is keyword research, then figure out which search terms you need to focus on for maximum results – then start SEO activities.

Many people get thuings back to front, they build a website, start working on SEO or investing in search engine optimisation services, then when they see they’re not getting much of a return, at some point they’ll realize that they need to go back to the drawing board & conduct keyword research first.

So without a doubt, SEO is needed – but it’s only worth doing once you know which search terms you need to focus on.

In my recent total surfing fitness review post, I went into quite a bit of detail about the brilliant surf fitness training program total surfing fitness. I explained how the reason many of us, especially those of us who don’t get into the sea as regular as we’d like – struggle to improve because of our fitness level, not our general fitness, but our surfing fitness, and when you think about it, this makes perfect sense – as you use very different parts of your body in very different ways when you’re paddling, popping up & surfing, than you do when jogging, cycling, doing curls or bench press etc.,

What I’ve noticed is that there are a number of people getting to my review page, who’re searching for total surfing fitness download, torrent, PDF, free download etc – and I just wanted to offer a word of advice about this.

A few questions for you:

How much did your board cost?

How much did your wetsuit(s) cost?

How much did your rashies cost? Your boardies, your leash, your wax……..

And you were happy to invest this money into enjoying the amazing sport of surfing?

This is a short post concerning Direct to Garment Printing, which actually has nothing to do with SEO or web marketing, but it’s a bit of an experiment to do with the importance of search term relevance when aiming for page one ranking. So feel free to skip past this post.

Garment printing / decoration is a business in which there are a number of potential routes forward, DTG (direct to garment), screen, dye sublimation, transfer, cad cut, etc – many processes, but one of the most popular currently, due to speed & ease of use (especially for one off Tshirt / garment printing and short runs) is DTG. It’s not the cheapest th0ugh, many would be Tshirt printers are shocked to learn that realistically they need to stump up 10-15k bare minimum! So for many, especially start up Tshirt decoration businesses, DTG isn’t the route forward.

I’m just doing a bit of research to see what position a brand new post about tyres – to see how quickly I can get a post about car tyres in Macclesfield, Tyres Wilmslow, and some other area’s in Cheshire such as Prestbury, Alderley Edge & Poynton near Stockport.

You’ll see I’m just doing the onpage basics in this post about car tyres, dunlop, Goodyear tyres, Bridgestone,Firestone,Yokohama,Continental,Good Year,Dunlop – truck tyres, part worn tyres and other related search terms.

I’m making sure that the main terms are in here but not over the top, the page title, URL, header tag, alt image tag, etc  are all in place.  I’ll also shove in a in an internal link about car tyres macclesfield - and of course all the content is unique.

I’ll see if this page ends up on page one for any of the target terms without any backlinking, just as a bit of a test, and if not I’ll get a few backlinks with relevant anchor text & see how that helps, maybe some decent quality high PR blog replies (making sure they’re DoFollow), I don’t think I’ll bother doing any article writing or anything, it’s just a little experiment.

By the way here are some geographically specific terms – Macclesfield, Cheshire, is the Silk Town, it’s about 30 miles south of Manchester,  Wilmslow is about 20 mins away, and is on the way to Manchester airport (airplane tyres, now I’ll bet they’re pricey!!) Prestbury is the posh area of Macclesfield (lots of BMW’s, Merc’s and sports cars there) – Wayne Rooney lives there, I drove past him once. I say David Beckham a couple of times when he lived in Wilmslow, and Victoria – in fact I met Eric Cantona at a cash machine in Wilmslow, he said “ello”  then got in his car and burned some rubber from his tyres, went through a red light – and it was in the local paper the next weekl that he got caught going through a red light – oops. Maybe he was trying to get away from me, haha.

What else can I say? Hmm, Adlington isn’t far from Macc (Macc is short for Macclesfield) , Alderley Edge is close to Wilmslow – and it’s where Merlin the wizard was supposed to be, I seem to remember that there’s some story about him still being there, weird!

I’ve not been on twitter long, like many people I kept putting it off until just a few weeks ago – and now I’m really into the twitter phenomenon.

I recently doubled my followers within a couple of days using a very clever little idea called tweet success (a way to automate this process – but in an ethical and non spammy manner, it just vastly speeds up what you would usually do manually) and I’m gaining many new twitter friends on a daily basis.  I’m making lots of connections, I’m learning from people – I’m helping people, it’s fantastic.

There’s one thing that I see people doing quite often with twitter, that always confuses me – and that is, holding back on following, in an attempt to build an account which is far heavier on followers than following.

Why?

As far as I can tell, most of the people that do this, do it in an attempt to demonstrate a large perceived profile – Ego, basically

But It doesn’t make sense, does it?

Surely the only way you’re really going to make connections, new allies, new colleagues, new friends, new customers – is with relationships, and you’re going to find it difficult to build relationships up with people who follow you, who you don’t follow back.

I’ve seen evidence of quite a few people with high profiles who don’t do this – and it appears to do wonders for their popularity.

The best example : Barack Obama.

Is twitter the reason Barack Obama won?

Well, look at this :

Senator John McCain Following :31| Followers: 146,756 .  Doesn’t follow back.

Barack Obama Following: 352,614 | Followers: 372,592. Does follow back!

So, John McCain didn’t build a relationship up with his twitter followers  – Barack Obama did.

Barack Obama won, of course -  So what does that tell you? Did this help Barack Obama to become president?

When you follow Barack Obama, and you see a few minutes later that he is following you, what does that do? Doesn’t it make you feel that little bit more connected to him – even though you know that the chances are he’ll never see a DM or @reply from you personally (he might, you never know), just the act of following you back does something to your perception of the other person & your relationship to them. If they follow you back then you feel more connected than if they don’t follow you back, wouldn’t you agree?

According to some of the articles I’ve read in the US media, I think some American twitter users are feeling slightly let down by their president at the moment possibly, seeing as he was quite prolific with his tweets right up until winning – and then has gone completely quiet since then, hopefully though most people will let him off for having a bit of a break from twitter while he gets settled in the new job, I’m sure he’ll be back tweeting again soon.

Or maybe he’ll take a leaf out of our PM’s book & employ a team of staff solely for tweeting.

What’s very clever, is that the twitter staff who refer to themselves as “No10 admin” are very active on twitter, even replying to people quite regularly, and these tweets aren’t authoritative or condescending, they’re very humble, and even funny at time, for instance :

Can you see what they’re doing?

They’re connecting with people on a whole new level, not through their normal channels, but be OUR normal channels!

They realize now that in order to really connect with people, they need to connect to us using the media that we use to connect to people, such as twitter – & if it was just a one way connection they wanted, they could do that via press releases, newspapers & TV – but it’s not, they want us to feel connected to them, which is why they follow back.

So -  personally, I’m following as many people as the twitter follow limit will allow me to, and over time – I’m unfollowing anyone who hasn’t followed me back, so that I can make sure I’m only following people who do actually want to build relationships.

It worked for Barack Obama, it’s working for no.10 downing street, I’ll work for us too

An example of the consequences of forgetting to renew your domain……

A client of mine: direct to garment printers , enjoyed #1 ranking for the search terms direct to garment printing, direct to garment printers & a range of other important search terms, which brought literally hundreds of enquiries over the period of about 18 month – and then, oops, client forgot to renew the domain….

They got it back, but in the meantime they lost their rankings – so its now my job to work on getting them back.

Just a quick example to people of how important it is not to forget to renew your domain names!

The website above has been created, just a week or so ago – and is now on page one of Google for plasterers in Bury, and other related terms.

This is just an example of what I or other Manchester SEO Consultants can do for local businesses.
